DHA
DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, is the key active ingredient used in most self-tanning products. It reacts with amino acids in the surface layers of your skin to produce a natural-looking golden-brown colour without the need for UV exposure.
How it works in skincare
In cosmetics DHA is used primarily in sunless tanners, gradual tanners and bronzing gels. It works through a Maillard reaction with the amino acids in the dead skin cells of the stratum corneum, developing a brown pigment called melanoidins over several hours. The colour is temporary and fades as the skin naturally sheds, usually lasting 5–7 days with a single application.
