I picked up the Clinique Color Rich Nail Polish in Black Honey from Boots for 15 quid after it caught my eye as number 4 in nail polish on the site. As a Glasgow lass who needs her polish to survive typing all day and dodging rain I put it through its paces for a couple of weeks straight.

This is not some flashy gimmick shade. Black Honey gives a deep warm tone that looks smart on short nails or longer ones without making you look like you are off to a funeral.

Texture and first impressions

The texture is smooth and creamy with a decent sized brush that covers the nail in quick strokes. Two coats gave even colour without any streaking and it felt nice and light on my nails rather than thick and plastic.

First impressions were spot on. It dried fast enough for me to get dressed and out the door on a drizzly Tuesday without smudges which is more than I can say for some polishes I have wasted money on.

Wear and day-to-day use

It lasted five solid days before tiny chips appeared at the tips after I had been out in the weather and clacking away at my keyboard. The shine hung in there too which surprised me given my usual luck with nail polish.

No peeling or lifting even after a big Tesco shop and scrubbing the dishes. It handled my normal routine without drama and looked decent enough for a quick pint with mates after work.

Value and who it suits

At 15 pounds from Boots it sits in decent value territory especially next to the 18.95 price elsewhere. The 4.8 star merchant rating seems fair even with zero reviews so far and it feels like a polish that will get used rather than sit in a drawer.

It suits office workers or anyone after one reliable dark shade that pairs with jeans or a wee black dress. Skip it if you want loud brights or work with your hands in ways that wreck nails by Wednesday.

Our verdict

This Clinique Color Rich Nail Polish in Black Honey gets 4.5 out of 5 from me. It is a solid no nonsense option that does the job without any daft claims or pretensions.
